Making a place wherever they can, the two young teachers gather their groups of eager children each one holding in their hands a book to read. Breaking every mould of the conventional library, the Pratham Library comes to life in the stories the teacher tells her eager audience. The idea behind making this video was to highlight the effectiveness of Pratham’s accelerated reading technique. For this purpose children who had either dropped out of school or who had never been to school were selected. After testing their leaning levels which ranged from being able to read simple paragraphs to not even being able to recognize letters, this technique was introduce to them.

After 20 days of classes, major changes were seen in the reading levels of these children. The most impressive outcome of this accelerated technique was that no child remained at nothing level by the end of the program.

The family came to Delhi in 2006 from their village and Kaajal started going to the Pratham library class. Then she didn’t even know the hindi letters. Soon she learnt them and in a few months was accepted in std. 3 in municipal school in Delhi. Now she can read books in English, has learnt Maths and is the brightest girl in her class.

The film shows Sainath talk about his life before entering the Pratham residential school and after. Sainath used to sell trinkelts in the local trains of Mumbai, when he met a Pratham teacher who told him to stay in the residential school where he would get food, a place to stay and most importantly education. It has been 3 years that he has been in this school and wants to be there even when he grows up.  56 boys live in this residential school in Mumbai and Pratham residential schools have 90,000 such children all over India.

Subject : The work done by Pratham in freeing many children from the zari (weaving) factories of Mumbai and sending them back to their villages and residential schools (also started by Pratham).

16,000 children out of 30,000 children were rescued and sent back to their homes or residential schools from the sweatshops of Mumbai. This was done with the support of the government and the legal system which abolishes child labour. This was done by first convincing the owners of these sweat shops that child labour is against the law and education is a right. This led to Pratham teachers teaching the children for 2-3 days everyday in sweat shops and in the drop in centres (with computers, carom etc.) in the neighbouring areas. After this, with the help of the police, these children were rescued.  Many children were sent to residential schools in Sitamarhi to be educated and live their childhood once again.
