THE PROGRAM
- Balsakhi Classes: prepare children who are in school but are not learning
- Pratham Education Center: are to educate children where there are no schools or the schools are over crowded.
THE JOURNEY SO FAR...
- In Mahendru & Gulzarbagh area Pratham is already working with 11 Government schools. Pratham interventions to reach 20 schools by the end of January 2003.
- The NPL funds have helped put 1500 children in the age group 5-14 years in 10 Government schools since last July.
- Currently there are 29 Balsakhis (community volunteers) working with regular school teachers to ensure that these children do not drop out and learn the prescribed curriculum.
- There are 6 Pratham Education Centers established with 700 children.
- As of now 30 rooms have been rented in 6 buildings in Chawk and Malsalami area for Pratham Education Center.
- By the end of December 2002, 10 PEC's will be in operation.
INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT
- A school has been cleaned, repaired and painted in Mirdahatoli in Gulzarbagh for less than 2,000 euro.
- Also 20 more schools have been identified for renovation work in Gulzarbagh.
- Focus will be on renovating the roofs, main gates, boundary walls, windows and doors of the classrooms in the Government schools.
- In addition, funds have also been allocated for providing sanitation facilities, drinking water facilities, black boards and planting trees in the Government school premises.
- So far such renovation has been carried out in 8 schools.
- During the year 2003, necessary renovation will be carried out in 20 schools.
- In Mirdahatoli and Bhaksaria Tola areas advise has been sought from a Professor of Bihar Engineering College on renovation work to ensure funds are utilised optimally. He has suggested re-construction of the roof in the buildings in the said areas. The renovation will be carried out during 2003.
- The community, head master and school teachers are also taking active participation in this intervention which will contribute to the optimal utilisation of funds.
