Programme update: October 2007

Basti Profile[1]

Schooling

3-5 years: In 2006, 71% children were out of Pre-schools. In 2007, 67% children are out of Pre-school.

5-14 years: In 2006, 19% children were out of School while in 2007, 16% are out of school.

Reading and Maths

·        6-7 years: In 2006, 22% children could read words or above and 30% could at least recognize numbers. In 2007, the corresponding situation is 28% and 38% respectively.

·        8-10 years: In 2006, 49% children could read easy paragraph or above and 37% could do at least subtraction. In 2007, the corresponding situation is 55% and 46% respectively.

·        11-14 years: In 2006, 65% children could read Story and 45% could do division. In 2007, the corresponding situation is 75% and 56% respectively.

At present Pratham’s programme is spread across 301 Bastis in Delhi situated in North Shahdara, South Shahdara, Zakhira (Karolbagh) and Nangloi (Nazafgarh) zones.

In Bastis

1. Balwadis: 3-5 yrs community children who are not in any pre-school net. Each class has about 20 children for 3 hours a day for 8-10 months. The objective is to enable children to become better-adjusted, happier learners. Enabling better retention and achievement at later stage.

Activities: based on the following themes:

          1. Language development

  2      2. Physical Development

3.       3. Cognitive development

          4. Social Development

          5. Emotional Development

Total number of Balwadis spread across these Bastis is 453 enrolling 8813 children between 3-5 years. Of this 52% are girls.

2. Community library- There are 301 libraries function in our Bastis (one in each Bastis). Besides there are 6 other libraries in community which is being developed as Community Learning Centers. 48643 children accessed community library in October at an average of about 160 per Basti. Of these about 85% of them have read more than 10 books so far. These libraries have 262 unique titles of books. Some of the activities conducted in the libraries are:

  • Story Telling

  • Story making

  • Map usage

  • Art and Craft

  • Drawing

  • Role Play and so on

3. Women’s Literacy Programme:

This is to make young women in slums, literate and numerate while engaging them in the learning and schooling of their children (for mothers) to reap multiple benefits. First, their own literacy, second, home support for their children and third their active participation in staying in touch with the school either individually or through the Parents Teachers Association.

95 classes are operational enrolling 1490 females. Of these 23% are in the age group 14-18 years, 40% between 19-30 years and rest above 30 years.

4. Abhivyakti Classes: It is to tutor children, who have learned to read and write through Pratham efforts to move to higher levels of comprehension, expression, and problem solving.

84 classes are operational with 1726 children. Among them 64% are girls. 60% of the total children enrolled in these classes are in the age-group of 8-10 years.

In Schools

1. School library: Libraries are operational in 289 Municipal schools spread across 6 municipal zones of Delhi. 91577 children at an average 317 children per school borrowed books during the last month. This is to supplement the efforts in community library and also institutionalize the culture of Library in Schools and make it part of the mainstream curriculum.

2. HI Newspaper project: Library children from 30 classes participate in this programme which is now expanded to children of different cities in Pratham programme and with other countries like Holland, Pakistan, Canada and Sweden. 3. School Support Programme: The programme is operational in 20 MCD schools of Delhi to develop a model of quality education in Municipal schools through direct involvement.

Special Programme

1. Educational Programme for working children: There are 12 TECs being run under INDUS Project having 518 children. Apart from this, there are 72 classes for Balshramik children operational in 4 areas of Delhi enrolling 1219 children. The objective of these classes is to provide them bridge education and get them back in mainstream education.

2. Health: For our Balwadi children, Micronutrient supplementation programme is being implemented under the guidance of Niramaya Health Foundation. About 8% children were found to be in grade III & IV of malnutrition in first camp (43% were at normal level) which has reduced to 4% in the second camp (62% children at normal level). Besides, we have also tied up with Shroff Charitable Eye Hospital to organize free eye-check up camp and provide spectacles or surgery at subsidized rates in needed cases. The programme continues with Balwadi children and in order to engage mothers of these children more actively, our CHVs have been trained by Niramaya Health foundation. 

3. Pratham Education Center (PEC): Two centers with the support of Tech Mahindra foundation is operational which is a rented space in community providing reading place to children. It also has Computer Assisted Learning programme.

4. English classes: 23 classes with 423 children using the TLM provided by Pratham English Programme team based in Mumbai is operational. This is being piloted at the moment before scaling up.  

Reading interventions

Reading Campaign in Bastis- As per the Basti Profile 2007, about 17592 children in 6-7 years age group were at letter or nothing level. Our librarians are in regular touch with 16517 children providing them simple reading paragraph to practice. This is followed up in weekly camps at Basti level. So far 7992 children have moved to higher reading category.

Early Reading by Mothers- 159 mothers of two Cities (North East Shahdara and West Delhi) are using our Balwachan material with their 5-6 years children to introduce early reading.

Mainstreaming-Out of 15746 out of school children identified in the age group 5-14 years, 5234 enrolled in government schools.

 

 

 

Basti is the cluster of about 250 households having about 450 children in 3-14 years age group. This is our internal term and Basti is the unit of planning and implementation of our programme. We conduct household survey every year to measure the change from last year and need assessment for the following year.
