Pratham was founded in Mumbai at the UNICEF initiative, with Farida Lambay and Madhav Chavan as Co-founders. Industrialist SP Godrej was the Founding Chairman, and Mumbai Municipal Commissioner Sharad Kale was the Vice-Chair
1995-96
Pratham’s tagline “Every Child in School & Learning Well” as well as blackboard logo introduced.
1996-97
Work began in all municipal schools of Mumbai with the Joyful Education Program in collaboration with teachers and officers. Narayanan Vaghul, chairman of ICICI, joined Pratham as Chairperson
1997-98
First internet campaign, in support of Rajya Sabha’s 83rd Amendment Bill, was launched to enforce the Right to Education. The National Alliance for the Fundamental Right to Education (NAFRE) was formed along with other NGOs to demand a common school system in India.
1998-99
Balsakhi Program, a remedial education intervention, was initiated in Mumbai’s municipal primary schools and “bridge courses” started for children who were out-of-school. Pratham’s model was replicated in more cities including Bangalore, Delhi, Pune Baroda, Allahabad, Patna etc.
Computer-assisted learning program started in partnership with Mumbai municipal schools.
Pratham USA was registered. Vijay Goradia took charge as the first Chairman of Pratham USA.
