Team/District Leader – What Works Hub for Global Education (Research Project on TaRL)

About Pratham

Pratham Education Foundation (Pratham) is one of the largest education NGOs in India with a record of innovative, rigorously evaluated programs that have inspired similar programs across three continents. With a history spanning 30 years, Pratham’s work today extends from programs for early and elementary years to girls and women, and youth skilling. Through programs covering 25 states and Union Territories, in an average year, Pratham usually reaches over 6 million children and youth. This is achieved through a combination of efforts: directly working with children and youth in communities, as well as through collaborations with state and district-level governments.

Pratham has received notable awards such as the Lui Che Woo Prize, WISE Prize for Innovation, Skoll Award for Social Entrepreneurship, the Henry R Kravis Prize in Leadership and the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year for Public Service. Pratham also received the 2021 Yidan Prize for Education Development and the Yashraj Bharati Samman in 2025.

About Project

Samagra Shiksha, Assam, has partnered with Pratham Education Foundation to implement the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach across the state. Pioneered by Pratham, TaRL is an evidence-based method aimed at helping children acquire basic reading and arithmetic skills within a short period. By grouping children based on their current learning levels and engaging them in targeted activities, the program effectively bridges learning gaps and strengthens foundational skills in early grades.

The What Works Hub Research Project is a year-long study focused on enhancing foundational literacy and numeracy outcomes for Grades 3, 4 and 5 in Morigaon district. In collaboration with ASER Centre and local district administrations, this project will assess and strengthen classroom practices to identify effective methods that improve foundational learning. Activities will include experimentation with teaching practices, classroom observations, assessments, and ongoing support for teachers, headmasters (HMs), and Resource Persons (RPs). Regular review meetings and close coordination with government partners will ensure alignment with the academic calendar and shared learning outcomes.
