Ashwini: A Mother Leading Learning in Her Community
Her simple decision to start a CAMaL Ka Camp class is now helping children strengthen their skills close to home
In a small town in Karnataka, Ashwini, a 31-year-old homemaker and mother of three, is making summer more meaningful—for her own children and for many others in her community.
Ashwini’s own journey hasn’t been easy. Growing up in a financially constrained household, she had to discontinue her education after completing Grade 12. Soon after, she got married and dedicated herself to raising her family. But even as her days filled up with responsibilities, one thing stayed with her, a deep love for learning and a strong desire to give back to her community.
Every summer, Ashwini saw a familiar concern among parents: children spending their holidays with little structure, often disconnected from learning. She often wished there was something children could look forward to, something that kept them engaged and supported their growth.
This year, she found a way to make that happen.
After learning about Pratham’s CAMaL Ka Camp, a community-based summer program that helps children strengthen their reading and math skills through fun and level-based activities, Ashwini stepped forward to volunteer.
Now, every day for an hour, she leads a group of children in her neighbourhood through simple games, language and math activities. Two of her own sons, currently in Grades 3 and 5, also attend the camp. Seeing their excitement, steady progress, and growing interest in learning brings her immense happiness.
“I couldn’t dream big for myself. But now, my dream is to help children, mine and others, dream bigger than I ever could,” she says.
Ashwini’s dedication and steady presence have made her a trusted figure in the community. What began as a small effort has now become a regular learning routine that children look forward to every day.
She may not have had the opportunity to complete her education, but today, she’s helping build the path for others to go further and believe in themselves.
