B. About Program:
Pratham’s intensive work in the field of Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) for the past 30 years shows that it is crucial to invest in the development of children. ECCE provides an opportunity for providing a stimulating environment for the child’s holistic development for ages 3-6 in particular. According to Census 2011, over 37 million children under the age of five live in urban areas across India. Urban Anganwadi Centres (AWCs), which form the backbone of early childhood care and education under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), function within urban environments that are markedly different from rural settings, often denser, diverse, and complex.
Children in these settings come from a wide spectrum of backgrounds, encompassing differences in gender, language, beliefs, family structures, socio-economic status, learning styles, and home and community influences. Understanding this diversity is essential to designing early learning models that are responsive, inclusive, and effective. This program focuses on co-creating and strengthening a context-responsive “Urban Anganwadi Model” that enables children aged 3-6 years to achieve improved school readiness through equitable access to high-quality, play-based early learning experiences both at home and in Anganwadis.
The model is currently being implemented across five urban geographies in India: Agra, Lucknow, Rampur, Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), and Patna (Bihar). Through deep engagement with local communities and government systems, the program aims to transform urban Anganwadis into vibrant, nurturing spaces that meet the developmental needs of every child.
